I Did What I Did For Maria
Tony Christy
Album: Worldhits & Love Songs
Intro: G
G D C
Sunrise this is the last day that I'll ever see
G
out in the court-yard they're ready for me
D G
but I go to my Lord without fear
D G
'cos I did what I did for Maria.
D G
As I rode into town with the sun going down
D G
all the windows were barred there was no one around
D G
for they knew that I'd come with my hand on my gun
D G
and revenge in my heart for Maria
D G
my dearest departed Maria.
Chorus
D G
Take an eye for an eye and a life for a life
D G
and somebody must die for the death of my wife
D G
yes I did what I did for Maria
D G
I did what I did for Maria.
G D C
Laughter echoed across for the end of the street
G
there was the man I was burnin' to meet
D G
and my mind was so calm and so clear.
D G
as I took my revenge for Maria.
D G
And he fell to the ground raisin' dust all around
D G
but I knew he was dead long before he went down
D G
it was quick it was clean made it easy on him
D G
which is more than he did for Maria.
D G
When he did what he did for Maria.
D G
Take an eye for an eye and a life for a life
D G
and somebody must die for the death of my wife
D G
yes I did what I did for Maria
D G
I did what I did for Maria.

Great tab for this song - very hard to get elsewhere on the net.
Just want to comment on some of the chords in the "verse" part. It uses a Jazz progression to get to the fifth (dominant) chord, and goes up in quite an intersting way. I just sat down and learnt it on the piano, and the chords actually go like this:
[tab] G Bmin(flat5) C Laughter echoed across for the end of the street Cm G there was the man I was burnin' to meet D G and my mind was so calm and so clear. (etc, etc) [/tab]
The Bm with a flat 5th is tricky to play - Bminor will do just as well, really. The really NICE move about it is how he gets from the C (major) and modulates to Cminor, then comes back to the original chord. So for 1 bar, the song changes from being in Gmajor into Cminor. Cmin is the relative minor of Eflat, so it's the equivlaent of whacking in a BAR of the E flat key, when you're actually playing in G. This is a simple song, but that run is worth millions of dollars :-)
-Bustopher | 12/3/2012 | Gee, that last post just didn't work when it was reflowed - all the spaces were taken out from between the chords.
Try instead:
[G] Laughter [Bmin(flat5th] echoed across from the [C] end of the street
[Cminor] there was the man I was [G] burnin' to meet
and my [D] mind was so calm and so [G] clear.
as I [D] took my revenge for [G] Maria.
Incidentally, I just noticed the "for" in the first line: should be "Laughter echoed across FROM the end of the street"
