Sister Morphine.
Marianne Faithfull.
Album: Broken English (1979)

Jagger & Richard had this as a track without lyrics,
so Marianne Faithfull wrote the lyrics and the song
was released as a 'B' side of 'Something Better'
21st February 1969. Quickly withdrawn when Decca
realised what it was about. In the U.K. the song was
credited to 'Faithfull' but in the U.S.A. London Records gave
credit to the Stones who released their version in 1971.
Later in 1969 Marianne was in Australia with Jagger for
the filming of Ned Kelly, she was admitted to hospital
after overdosing on sleeping tablets! Ironic huh!
Currently a copy is around 60 in the U.K.

The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears,

What am I doing in this place? Why does the doctor have no face?
G F
Oh, I can't crawl across the floor,
          Am F Am Am7 Am
Can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm just trying to score.

Am
Well, it just goes to show things are not what they seem,

Please, Sister Morphine, turn my nightmare into dreams,
G F
Oh, can't you see I'm fading fast,
Am F Am Am7 Am
And that this shot will be the last.

Am
Sweet Cousin Cocaine, lay your cool hands on my head,
                                   D Am
Hey, Sister Morphine, you'd better make up my bed,
          G/A G F
'Cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead,
            Am F
And you can sit around and you can watch,
                E7 Am (hold)
The clean white sheets stained red.
